Overview

Conceived and launched Tour de Lakewood, a free community cycling event billed as "the most epic community cycling event Lakewood, Ohio has ever seen." The event invites riders of all skill levels to explore Lakewood's 5.5 square miles on their own terms — no mandatory route, no entry fee, just 12 hours to cover as much of the city as possible.

The inaugural edition ran in 2025 as a small informal ride. The 2026 edition scaled up significantly, with the event running in affiliation with Bike Lakewood, the local branch of Bike Cleveland.

Key Features Built

  • Route Analyzer Tool - Custom GPX upload tool that calculates exactly how many miles of a rider's ride fell inside Lakewood city limits and the percentage of city coverage achieved
  • Leaderboards - Post-event rankings across three categories: total distance, map coverage percentage, and elevation gain
  • Event Info & Registration - Full event site with format details, participation guidelines, and FAQ

Technical Implementation

  • Built the full site from scratch using Astro and JavaScript
  • Developed a GPX file analyzer that parses GPS data from Strava or Garmin exports and calculates in-bounds mileage against city limits

Impact

Tour de Lakewood brought together casual riders, families on cruiser bikes, and competitive cyclists under one community event with zero barriers to entry. From a small handful of riders in 2025 to a growing community event in 2026 — built and organized entirely from scratch.
